What Will LASIK Not Correct?

LASIK is a short procedure that can treat refractive errors and reduce dependence on glasses and contacts in a few minutes. When performed by a qualified surgeon, it is very safe and usually very successful. Because of its excellent track record, LASIK is one of the most popular elective surgeries performed around the world, and has helped millions of people achieve clearer vision.

However, it is important to understand that LASIK surgery is not a solution to every eye or vision problem, and it is not right for everyone. Read on as Dr. Gregory Pamel explains what LASIK will not correct.

Keratoconus

Like refractive errors, keratoconus affects the cornea, or transparent tissue that covers the surface of the eye, and it causes blurry or distorted vision. However, keratoconus cannot be treated with LASIK. In fact, LASIK can actually exacerbate the condition, which occurs when the normally round cornea thins out and bulges into a cone-like shape. Dr. Pamel offers several treatments for keratoconus, including corneal crosslinking, special contact lenses and corneal transplant.

Cataracts

Cataracts are a disease of the eye’s lens (not the cornea) that causes blurry, hazy or otherwise distorted vision. Cataracts usually develop in people over the age of 65. LASIK surgery is not a suitable solution for cataracts — the only way to treat cataracts is by removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with an artificial lens.

(Note that having LASIK earlier in life does not impact a patient’s ability to have cataract surgery.)

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a disease characterized by an increase in pressure inside the eye. As the disease advances, it gradually damages the optic nerve, the nerve that transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. Eventually, glaucoma can cause a permanent loss of vision. LASIK cannot treat glaucoma and is normally not an option for individuals with refractive errors and glaucoma.

Are You a Good Candidate for LASIK?

If you are considering LASIK to correct a refractive error, the best way to determine whether you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Pamel. He will perform an eye exam, take your medical history and discuss your treatment goals with you before recommending you for surgery.
