Study Shows Eye Surgeons Undergo LASIK, Recommend Procedure to Family Members
- Posted on: May 10 2017
It’s no secret that thousands of individuals undergo LASIK vision correction each year in order to reduce their dependency on glasses and contact lenses. But what about the LASIK surgeons themselves? A study published in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery found that a large percentage of LASIK surgeons choose LASIK for crisper, clearer vision. NYC LASIK surgeon Dr. Gregory Pamel discusses the study’s findings in this blog post.
About the Study’s Findings
A total of 250 ophthalmologists were randomly selected from a database of over 2,000 ophthalmologists who had performed LASIK in the past decade. The selected participants were surveyed and asked several questions, including whether they had refractive errors and whether they were eligible for LASIK. Of the surgeons eligible for laser vision correction, 62.6 percent reported that they had undergone LASIK and more than 90 percent said they would recommend laser vision correction to adult members of their immediate family.
Because laser vision correction requires precise skill and technique, it is paramount that LASIK surgeons themselves have excellent vision. San Antonio ophthalmologist and co-author of the study Dr. Gregory Parkhurst, underwent LASIK himself in 2003. Having performed the procedure for years, Dr. Parkhurst understood what to expect from the procedure.
“Knowing the risk of potential side effects and complications of LASIK are far less than those of daily contact lens use, I knew I was choosing the best option for my vision and eye health,” Dr. Parkhurst told the American Refractive Surgery Council. “Today, my vision is now what I would consider perfect for me. When I’m measured on the eye chart, it’s better than 20/20, it’s 20/15 vision, and I never wear glasses or contacts for anything.”
