Surgical Options for Reducing Your Dependence on Glasses
- Posted on: Jun 8 2022
One of the main questions that patients ask Dr. Gregory Pamel when considering their surgical vision correction options is whether they will still have to wear glasses after surgery. Luckily for patients, over the past 15 years vision correction technologies have advanced. All of these advances mean that Pamel Vision & Laser Group can reduce or completely eliminate your dependence on glasses.
1. LASIK
LASIK, or “laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis,” is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery. It can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Dr. Pamel uses the Allegretto Wavelight laser to perform the fastest correction available in the United States. A majority of his patients report better than 20/20 vision after the procedure.
2. PRK/LASEK
Not all patients are LASIK candidates. However, those patients may still reduce their dependence on glasses with PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) or LASEK. These are vision correction surgeries that offer similar results to LASIK.
Like LASIK, PRK and LASEK are both procedures to reshape the cornea. LASEK can be an alternative for patients with corneas that are too thin for other procedures.
When compared with LASIK, PRK can take longer for patients to notice visual improvements.
Note that LASIK, PRK and LASEK do not prevent age-related vision changes and some patients may still need glasses.
3. Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. It can have many causes. Patients with cataracts may have to wear glasses to help with vision problems caused by cataracts.
Dr. Pamel offers laser cataract eye surgery utilizing the Optimedica Catalys Precision Laser System. During the procedure, the clouded natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. Dr. Pamel offers several different types of intraocular lenses, including monofocal and multifocal options. The artificial lens may reduce or completely eliminate the patient’s need for glasses for certain activities or tasks.
4. Multifocal Intraocular Lens Implant Surgery
Patients can now benefit from Prelex, which stands for presbyopic lens exchange. Similar to cataract surgery, this procedure utilizes intraocular lenses that are permanently implanted in the eye. This procedure can reduce the need for glasses for patients who are farsighted.
5. Phakic Lens Implant Surgery
A phakic lens implant is a lens implant that can correct different types of vision problems. Unlike other procedures, the natural lens of the eye remains in place with this implant. Over half of the patients undergoing the implant procedure achieve better vision after the operation than they had with glasses before the operation.
6. Corneal Inlay
As patients age, they can develop presbyopia, a condition most noticeable when small text or near objects appear blurry. While reading glasses were traditionally used to treat presbyopia, now patients can benefit from a corneal inlay. The corneal inlay is a small device that is implanted into the eye to help patients focus clearly on near objects and reduce the need for glasses.
