Top Misconceptions about LASIK

LASIK is a very popular elective eye surgery that corrects refractive errors (i.e., nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism) for clear, crisp vision. Unfortunately, the procedure is commonly misunderstood. In this post, New York City eye surgeon Gregory Pamel clears up some of the most pervasive misconceptions about LASIK surgery.

I am too old for LASIK.

There is no upper age limit for LASIK. Vision prescription, eye health and general health are the more important criteria than age when evaluating a LASIK candidate.

LASIK requires a long recovery.

Recuperating from LASIK surgery is usually quite rapid. Many LASIK patients notice an improvement in vision very quickly after the operation. Most are able to drive and resume work and the rest of their regular activities as soon as the day after surgery.

I will need to wear glasses after LASIK.

The large majority of LASIK patients experience partial or complete independence from glasses and contact lenses after surgery. Some patients have vision that is better than 20/20 after surgery.

I wasn’t a candidate a few years ago, so LASIK isn’t for me.

Recent advances in LASIK technology have made the procedure safe and effective for candidates than were once told they didn’t qualify for surgery. If you were previously told by a different provider that LASIK is not right for you, Dr. Pamel invites you to schedule a consultation at our practice to review your options.

Halos and glare are common after LASIK.

Although some patients experience halos or glare after surgery, these distortions are usually temporary and resolve within eight weeks.

Most LASIK patients need a touch-up treatment to refine the results.

The number of patients that have residual vision problems after surgery requiring retreatment (i.e., enhancement) is very small. Dr. Pamel’s enhancement rate is between two and five percent.

LASIK is too expensive for my budget.

Our practice offers two financing options to pay for the procedure in installments. Both options offer zero percent interest for the first year for qualified patients. We also participate in a number of insurance plans that may offer coverage for the custom procedure.

All LASIK surgeons are the same.

Actually, the experience and skill of your LASIK surgeon is extremely important to your visual outcomes. The technology s/he uses also influences your results. Dr. Pamel not only is one of the most experienced LASIK surgeons in New York City but also trains other surgeons in LASIK techniques. And, he offers leading-edge technology for safer, more precise results.
