Keratoconus Treatment and Research Center in NYC
The Keratoconus Treatment and Research Center is a center of excellence in New York City to provide patients with the most advanced technologies available for the treatment of keratoconus. Dr. Pamel was the first physician in New York City to perform corneal collagen crosslinking for keratoconus and post lasik ectasia in an FDA clinical trial in 2010. Since that time he has performed crosslinking on several thousand patients and has a wealth of experience managing patients with keratoconus. He has shared his experiences woth other physicians in the U.S. and internationally in courses he has taught at the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. The goal of crosslinking is to stop the progression of keratoconus. While the treatment can improve vision, patients with keratoconus who have undergone crosslinking will often still need specialty contact lenses to fully correct their vision. At Keratoconus Treatment Center, Dr. Pamel and his contact lens specialists will assist patients who have had difficulty wearing contact lenses or who made need a refit after crosslinking.
In addition, Dr. Pamel has been working with Dr. John Kannellopoulos – the pioneer in topography-guided PRK surgery to reshape the cornea in patients with keratoconus. While the topo-guided PRK procedure uses the same excimer laser as is used to treat patients for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, the purpose of this treatment in patients with keratoconus is to reshape the cornea to improve the quality of vision. This is an off-label treatment utilizing the FDA approved Wavelight topography guided software.
