Eye Services in New York City
Elite NYC ophthalmologist Dr. Gregory Pamel has over 20 years of experience performing vision-saving surgeries. Though he is perhaps best known for laser vision correction procedures, he receives top reviews and referrals for a variety of other procedures, including:
Implantable Contact Lenses
With phakic lens implants, Dr. Pamel can implant a plastic or silicone lens into the eye permanently so that the patient does not need to rely on prescription eyewear to correct existing refractive errors. While similar procedures involve removing the eye’s natural lens, phakic lenses leave the natural lenses intact. It is a good choice for patients who are not a good candidate for laser vision correction procedures like LASIK. Dr. Pamel offers both Verisyse™ and Visian ICL phakic lenses.
Presbyopia Treatments
Presbyopia affects almost all adults. Beginning at middle age, a person’s eyes gradually lose their ability to see up-close objects clearly. To help his patients lower their dependence on reading glasses as they age, Dr. Pamel can perform laser assisted presbyopia reversal (LAPR), scleral implant procedures or accommodating intraocular lenses.
Multifocal intraocular lenses are an especially popular choice among Dr. Pamel’s patients. Prelex (which is short for presbyopic lens exchange) lenses can replace the natural lenses for patients who suffer from age-related farsightedness.
Cornea Disease and Transplants
The cornea is the transparent layer of tissue located over the pupil and iris. It plays a vital role in sight since it enables light to pass through. For this reason, corneal diseases and conditions like keratoconus, corneal clouding, corneal edema (swelling) and Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy should be treated with urgency.
Cataract & Lens Implant Surgery
Cataracts typically develop with age, causing the vision to become progressively hazier. Nearly half of all American adults develop cataracts by the time they are 75. The good news is that clear vision can be restored easily with laser cataract surgery. This procedure replaces the eye’s natural lens with an intraocular lens for permanent improvement. Dr. Pamel offers both monofocal and multifocal lens implants to his patients.
Corneal transplant can address many of these issues by replacing damaged corneal tissue with donor tissue from a cadaver. Patients may also be interested in the new and improved procedure DSEK (Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty) sutureless corneal transplant. Additionally, corneal crosslinking, a non-invasive treatment that slows the progression of keratoconus, can help to prevent the need for a transplant in the first place.
Artificial Iris Implants
The iris is the colored portion of the eye with the pupil at its center. The iris can lose tissue due to an injury or defect, which can cause light sensitivity, decreased night vision and, sometimes, cosmetic issues. Dr. Pamel is one of a few ophthalmologists in the United States who performs an artificial iris implant procedure for patients who could benefit from it.
Specialty Contact Lenses
Patients with keratoconus or irregularly shaped corneas generally cannot wear traditional contact lenses to correct their vision. Fortunately, specialty lenses are available to keep vision crisp despite these irregularities. After examining your eyes and finding the appropriate prescription, Dr. Pamel may recommend specialty soft contact lenses, hybrid contact lenses, scleral contact lenses or prosthetic scleral devices.
